L'omniprésence des forteresses en pierre est le résultat direct de l'invasion normande débutée en 1170. Avant leur arrivée, les rois irlandais utilisaient principalement des structures en terre et en bois appelées "Motte and Bailey". Les Normands, agissant comme les ingénieurs de guerre de l'époque, ont introduit la construction en pierre massive pour consolider leur pouvoir et protéger les terres acquises via le système féodal. Des édifices colossaux comme le château de Trim servaient de message visuel clair : les nouveaux arrivants comptaient s'installer durablement sur l'île.
Cette expression décrit l'assimilation culturelle surprenante des colons normands au fil des générations. Bien qu'ils soient arrivés en conquérants, les Normands ont fini par adopter la langue irlandaise, les vêtements locaux et les coutumes celtiques, comme les lois de Brehon. Ils se sont mariés avec des familles gaéliques, créant un métissage culturel qui a fini par inquiéter la couronne d'Angleterre, car ces seigneurs devenaient trop indépendants vis-à-vis de Londres.
La Fuite des Comtes en 1607 marque le départ en exil des derniers grands chefs gaéliques, dont Hugh O'Neill, vers l'Europe continentale après leur défaite contre les forces anglaises. Cet événement est tragique car il a "décapité" l'organisation sociale traditionnelle de l'Irlande. En l'absence de ces chefs pour réclamer leurs terres, la Couronne britannique a pu lancer les "Plantations", confisquant les territoires pour y installer des colons protestants, ce qui a durablement modifié la démographie et la structure politique du nord de l'île.
La survie de l'identité irlandaise repose sur une résistance culturelle souvent clandestine. Face aux lois interdisant les écoles catholiques, les Irlandais ont créé les "Hedge Schools" (écoles des haies), où les professeurs enseignaient le latin, le grec et l'histoire en secret dans la nature. De même, la langue et les traditions ont été préservées par les conteurs itinérants et les moines exilés en Europe qui continuaient de copier des manuscrits. Cette résilience a permis à l'âme du pays de perdurer alors même que les structures de pouvoir gaéliques avaient disparu.
