His reputation suffered from his preference for "peasant activities" like swimming and rowing over martial pursuits, and most damaging was his obsession with favorites, particularly Piers Gaveston. Edward's coronation feast became a showcase for Gaveston's arrogance. The banquet hall was decorated with tapestries bearing Edward and Gaveston's arms rather than the royal couple's. Edward spent the entire feast talking with Gaveston while neglecting his young bride Isabella, who had already complained to her father about being kept in poverty. By 1310, the situation had deteriorated so severely that parliament demanded the appointment of twelve men to reform the government. When Edward hesitated, the barons threatened deposition, forcing him to accept twenty-one "ordainers" who would publish reform ordinances by September 1311. After Gaveston's execution in 1312, Edward found new favorites in the Despensers, father and son. Their aggressive acquisition of Welsh lands created conflicts even among Edward's inner circle, while royal authority continued to crumble throughout the realm. By 1326, Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer invaded England with a small force of seven hundred Dutch and German mercenaries. They were joined by prominent English exiles and brought with them the heir to the throne, Edward earl of Chester. Edward II was forced to abdicate in favor of his fourteen-year-old son. He died in Berkeley Castle under mysterious circumstances, with rumors of a red-hot poker being inserted into his body through a horn to leave no external marks-a symbolic punishment for his alleged homosexuality. Edward III proved a stark contrast to his father. After seizing power from Mortimer in a daring coup at Nottingham Castle in 1330, the seventeen-year-old king declared he would "henceforth govern his people according to right and reason." His personal badge-a sunburst breaking through clouds-symbolized the hope he brought after years of misrule. He immediately established himself as a knightly king, hosting near-monthly tournaments where aristocrats dressed in splendid costumes, acted out legendary roles, and engaged in mock battles. Edward III's greatest achievement was founding the Order of the Garter, which bound the knightly community to him and made foreign military service a badge of honor rather than a feudal burden. The order created an exclusive caste to celebrate and reward chivalry while connecting the king and his sons to their battlefield companions. The Plantagenet dynasty concluded with Richard II, whose reign began with extraordinary promise when, at fourteen, he defused the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 through personal courage. However, his later years were marked by increasing tyranny and erratic behavior. After being deposed by his cousin Henry Bolingbroke in 1399, Richard died in prison at Pontefract Castle. After eight generations and 245 years of unbroken succession, the Plantagenet dynasty had ended, having transformed England from a Norman conquest into one of Europe's most powerful and sophisticated kingdoms.
