L'Acte d'Union, entré en vigueur le 1er janvier 1801, a entraîné la suppression du parlement irlandais à Dublin et l'absorption de l'Irlande au sein du Royaume-Uni. Cette décision a été prise par Londres pour des raisons de sécurité après la révolte des "Irlandais Unis" en 1798. En conséquence, l'Irlande est devenue une province dirigée directement depuis Westminster, perdant son autonomie politique. Cette union a créé de fortes tensions sociales, car la majorité catholique se sentait trahie et privée de droits civiques, comme celui de siéger au parlement, au profit d'une petite élite protestante.
Surnommé "Le Libérateur", Daniel O’Connell était un avocat catholique qui est devenu une figure centrale de la politique irlandaise au XIXe siècle. Il a révolutionné la lutte politique en utilisant la mobilisation populaire massive et non-violente. En fondant la "Catholic Association" et en instaurant la "rente catholique" d'un penny par mois, il a permis aux plus pauvres de participer au combat politique. Son plus grand succès fut l'obtention de l'Émancipation catholique en 1829, permettant aux catholiques de siéger au Parlement britannique. Il est également célèbre pour ses "monster meetings", des rassemblements géants visant à obtenir l'annulation de l'Acte d'Union.
La Grande Famine a été causée par le mildiou, un champignon qui a détruit les récoltes de pommes de terre, aliment de base unique pour un tiers de la population. La catastrophe a été aggravée par le système foncier et la politique économique de l'époque : alors que les Irlandais mouraient de faim, l'île continuait d'exporter du blé et du bétail vers l'Angleterre sous escorte armée. En sept ans, cette tragédie a causé un million de morts et poussé un million d'autres personnes à l'exil, réduisant la population de l'île d'un quart et entraînant le déclin de la langue gaélique.
Les "coffin ships" étaient des navires de transport de marchandises, souvent utilisés pour le bois, qui ont été sommairement réaménagés pour transporter les émigrants irlandais fuyant la famine vers l'Amérique. Le nom vient des conditions de voyage atroces et du taux de mortalité terrifiant à bord. Les passagers étaient entassés dans des cales sombres et insalubres où les maladies comme le typhus se propageaient rapidement. Sur certains navires, comme le Virginius, près d'un tiers des passagers mouraient durant la traversée, faisant de ces bateaux de véritables cercueils flottants.
Le chemin vers l'indépendance a été long et marqué par plusieurs étapes clés. Après l'échec des tentatives de "Home Rule" (autonomie interne), le Soulèvement de Pâques en 1916 a marqué un tournant : bien que militairement raté, l'exécution de ses leaders a transformé l'opinion publique en faveur de l'indépendance totale. S'en est suivie une guerre d'indépendance menée par l'IRA et le Sinn Féin, aboutissant au Traité anglo-irlandais de 1921. Ce traité a créé l'État libre d'Irlande au sud (26 comtés) mais a entériné la partition de l'île, l'Irlande du Nord restant rattachée au Royaume-Uni.
