Heidelberg Castle is a captivating collision of architectural styles, featuring Gothic windows and Renaissance statues. Located on the Königstuhl hill, this red sandstone structure served as a grand residence for the Prince Electors of the Palatinate. Despite its origins as an impregnable fortress, it remains a beautiful disaster of ruins that never fully recovered from catastrophic events in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Visitors can view the massive sprawling ruin by looking up from the Heidelberg Marktplatz. The castle appears to grow directly out of the green forests of the Königstuhl hill, overlooking the city. Today, it attracts over a million visitors annually who come to see the heart of what was once a powerful intellectual and political center within the Holy Roman Empire.

First mentioned in historical records in 1225 as a simple fortress, the site was expanded by the Prince Electors of the Palatinate into one of the grandest Renaissance residences north of the Alps. However, the castle is defined by contradictions; while built for power and defense, it was repeatedly conquered and dismantled by invading armies, eventually becoming the famous ghost of a palace seen today.
