    “

By recognizing the assumption—by seeing the connection between the disgust for one sister and the frustration with the other—you stop being a passenger to your defense mechanisms and start becoming the driver.

    Question posée

I told my therapist that I had a disgusted face when I see my snake sister pull up in the drive way. But then I felt that disgust and seen my other sister who I’m ok with and was in the drive way and made it difficult for me to get in and I connected them together and I threw it on to her and then my therapist said it’s great to recognize the assumptions we make.

    Foire aux questions

Emotional displacement occurs when you redirect feelings meant for one person toward another, often within sibling relationships. In this episode, we discuss how a negative reaction toward one sister can unintentionally be projected onto another family member. By gaining mental health awareness through therapy, individuals can learn to identify these misplaced emotions and prevent them from damaging healthy connections with their loved ones.

Recognizing assumptions is a key therapy insight that helps individuals pause before reacting to family members. When we assume a sibling's intentions are negative based on past experiences with others, we create unnecessary conflict. By identifying these internal biases, you can approach each family interaction with a fresh perspective, leading to more authentic communication and stronger, more stable sibling relationships over time.

Projecting emotions often happens when we carry unresolved tension from one interaction into the next. For example, feeling disgust toward one sister may cause you to unfairly target another sister who happens to be nearby. Therapy helps highlight these patterns, allowing you to separate your feelings for different individuals. Understanding this process is vital for maintaining healthy family dynamics and ensuring your reactions are grounded in reality.
