The MBT-70 was a joint venture between the US and West Germany that became a "train wreck" due to extreme complexity and ballooning costs. The project was plagued by bureaucratic bickering, such as disagreements over whether to use metric or imperial bolts, and the resulting machine was too heavy for practical use. Its collapse in 1970 left the US Army in a desperate position, facing a Soviet Union that was rapidly producing T-62 and T-72 tanks.
Chobham armor, also known as Burlington armor, is a composite "sandwich" of ceramics and metals designed to shrug off shaped-charge jets from anti-tank missiles. Because this armor required the tank's skin to be approximately two feet thick—compared to the four inches of armor on older models—designers had to completely rethink tank architecture. This led General Creighton Abrams to raise the weight limit of the XM1 to 58 tons to accommodate the massive protection.
While General Motors' diesel prototype was initially more reliable, cheaper, and preferred by the Army, the Pentagon intervened and mandated a turbine engine. This decision is often attributed to a mix of political and strategic factors, including a desire to standardize parts with West Germany and a potential "bailout" for the financially struggling Chrysler Corporation. Chrysler eventually won by using a four-month delay to drastically cut production costs while GM struggled to integrate the unfamiliar turbine technology.
In the late 1970s, the press dubbed the tank the "Army Edsel" due to significant reliability issues. The turbine engine was notoriously "thirsty," consuming twice as much fuel as a diesel while idling, and produced 2,000-degree exhaust that could scald supporting infantry. Additionally, early models suffered from "throwing" tracks in the mud and engine failures caused by dust entering the system through poorly fitted air filters.
The Abrams vindicated its "gold-plated" reputation during the Gulf War by dominating Iraqi T-72s. Its advanced fire control systems allowed it to destroy enemy tanks at ranges over 2,500 meters, well beyond the reach of Soviet-designed guns. The tank's protection was so effective that not a single Abrams was lost to enemy tank fire; the only units destroyed were victims of friendly fire or were intentionally scuttled by US forces to prevent capture.
