William Thomas Beckford (1760-1844) était un noble anglais excentrique, voyageur et auteur de Vathek, une œuvre séminale de la littérature gothique.

Né au sein d'une immense fortune à Londres, Beckford hérita de vastes domaines et développa une fascination de toute une vie pour la culture arabe et Les Mille et Une Nuits. Cette obsession culmina avec Vathek, un roman de fantasy sombre initialement écrit en français au cours des quatre premiers mois de 1782 — prétendument conçu dans un unique élan créatif de trois jours et deux nuits.
