The exodus initiated a new chapter in Russian-Jewish history, raising fundamental questions about identity and cultural preservation. Solzhenitsyn contemplates whether the peculiar Russian-Jewish character - shaped by generations of coexistence, conflict, and cultural exchange - will maintain its distinctiveness in new environments or gradually merge into the broader patterns of Jewish diaspora life. He extends "a handshake of understanding" across historical divides, emphasizing that understanding this shared past remains "a moral imperative for Jews and Russians alike" - essential for both peoples to move forward with clarity and mutual respect.

The Paradox of Jewish Identity and Assimilation

The author explores the profound inner conflict experienced by assimilating Jews. Gershenzon describes it as "the never-ending struggle of two wills within Jewry: the human will against the superhuman one, the individual against the collective." Despite Jews obtaining equal rights, Jewish identity continues to disintegrate from within as "the religious unity of the Jewish nation" decays. Even "the most complete assimilation is ephemeral: it never becomes natural" and assimilated Jews face criticism from fellow Jews for "national defection." The rise of Zionism cast new light on this problem. Jabotinsky argued that assimilated Jews cannot truly adopt foreign cultures, as demonstrated when Germanized Jews in Austria-Hungary quickly adapted to Czech, Hungarian and Polish cultures when circumstances changed. While anti-Semitism has been "for all practical purposes eliminated" in Western countries, this has accelerated assimilation rather than strengthening Jewish identity. The Diaspora faces existential challenges with intermarriage rates skyrocketing from 6% in the 1960s to 60% by the 1990s in America, with similar patterns in Europe and Latin America. In Russia, 73% of married Jewish men and 63% of Jewish women had non-Jewish spouses by 1988. Despite widespread assimilation, many Jews maintain a distinct identity even when fully integrated into other cultures. As one Russian Jewish writer explains: "I do not have two souls, which quarrel with each other... I have one soul... and it is not two-faced, not divided in two, and not mixed." The author concludes that "assimilation has not been very convincing" and that "wherever you look, you will find insoluble Jewish residue in the assimilated liquid," suggesting the Diaspora may endure despite predictions of its demise.
