Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Né(e): December 11, 1918 – Kislovodsk, Stavropol Krai, Russia

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was a Russian novelist, historian, and dissident whose work examined Soviet repression, imprisonment, and moral endurance. Best known for One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and The Gulag Archipelago, he won the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature, and his writings helped reveal the Soviet camp system worldwide.

Biographie et Parcours de l'Auteur

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was born in 1918 in Kislovodsk and grew up largely in Rostov-on-Don, in the unsettled aftermath of the Russian Revolution and civil war. Trained first in mathematics and physics at Rostov State University, he also pursued literature through correspondence study, an early sign of the double life he would long maintain: outwardly a disciplined Soviet citizen, inwardly a writer of moral and historical ambition. The decisive turn came during the Second World War. Serving as a Red Army artillery officer, he was arrested in 1945 after private letters criticized Joseph Stalin. He spent eight years in prisons and labor camps, followed by internal exile in Kazakhstan.
