Aharon Appelfeld (1932–2018) était un survivant de la Shoah et un romancier israélien de renom qui a apporté une authenticité bouleversante à Histoire d'une vie, des mémoires entremêlant traumatisme personnel et identité juive au sens large. Né à Czernowitz, en Roumanie (aujourd'hui en Ukraine), Appelfeld a survécu au meurtre de sa mère, à l'emprisonnement dans un camp de travail en Transnistrie et à des années de clandestinité dans les forêts ukrainiennes avant d'émigrer en Israël en 1946.

Ses œuvres, notamment l'allégorie séminale de la Shoah Badenheim 1939 et le roman autobiographique L'Homme qui ne s'arrêtait pas de dormir, dissèquent les thèmes de la mémoire, de la survie et de la dislocation culturelle à travers une prose dépouillée et envoûtante.

Lauréat du prix Israël (1983) et professeur de littérature de longue date à l'université Ben-Gourion, Appelfeld a suscité une reconnaissance internationale pour avoir recadré les récits de la Shoah au-delà des tropes conventionnels de l'horreur.
