Sa série A Song of Ice and Fire, qui comprend A Game of Thrones et A Storm of Swords, a redéfini la fantasy moderne avec ses personnages moralement complexes et sa construction d'univers riche en nuances.

Diplômé de l'Université Northwestern, l'œuvre de Martin s'inspire d'influences historiques et d'une profondeur psychologique, ce qui lui a valu le surnom de « Tolkien américain » par le magazine Time. Au-delà des romans, il a co-créé l'anthologie Wild Cards et a contribué à des jeux vidéo comme Elden Ring.
