Their studies showed that while people explicitly claim to value creativity, they implicitly favor practicality when faced with even minimal uncertainty. This bias creates a "hierarchy of no" in organizations where managers at multiple levels must evaluate ideas, each considering whether an innovation might harm their business unit or career. Rite-Solutions, founded by Jim Lavoie and Joe Marino, developed an innovative system to overcome organizational bias against creativity. They created the "Mutual Fun"-an internal market where employees can list innovative concepts without management approval. Employees receive $10,000 in virtual currency to invest in promising ideas and can volunteer time to help develop them. This market-based approach spreads decision-making risk throughout the company, allowing the best ideas to naturally emerge. In its first year alone, the system generated 50% of the company's new business growth. The most successful innovations often succeed not through their creativity alone, but through the persistence of their creators who push through inevitable rejection. As Burkus concludes, "We don't just need more great ideas; we need to spread the great ideas we already have."
