Carl Valdemar Jussi Henry Adler-Olsen est l'auteur danois de romans policiers à succès international, connu pour Miséricorde (The Keeper of Lost Causes), le premier roman de sa célèbre série du Département V mettant en scène le détective profondément tourmenté Carl Mørck.

Né à Copenhague en 1950, Adler-Olsen est le fils du célèbre psychiatre Henry Olsen, ce qui a profondément influencé son exploration de la complexité psychologique et des dysfonctionnements institutionnels dans la fiction policière scandinave. Il a étudié la médecine, la sociologie, les sciences politiques et le cinéma avant de se consacrer entièrement à l'écriture en 1995.

Avant de lancer le Département V, Adler-Olsen a écrit des thrillers indépendants à succès, notamment L'Effet papillon (The Alphabet House, 1997) et Manifeste 15.
