Né en 1955 à Jonesboro, dans l'Arkansas, Grisham a exercé le droit dans le Mississippi et a siégé à la législature de l'État avant d'assister, en 1984, à un procès pour viol atroce qui a inspiré son premier roman, Non coupable.

Son expertise juridique et son expérience des tribunaux nourrissent profondément ses thrillers psychologiques, qui explorent les failles systémiques du système de justice pénale. La Liste du juge retrouve l'enquêtrice Lacy Stoltz, mêlant des éléments de procédure juridique à un récit glaçant de tueur en série.

Grisham a écrit plus de trente romans, vendus à plus de 60 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde et traduits en 29 langues. Il a remporté à deux reprises le prix Harper Lee pour la fiction juridique et siège aux conseils d'administration de l'Innocence Project et de Centurion Ministries.
