The internet represents a perfect example of evolutionary emergence - complex, ordered, and patterned, yet undesigned and decentralized. Unlike radio and television which facilitated totalitarian control through one-to-many broadcasting, the internet's many-to-many structure undermines dictatorial governments. Though often credited to government research (Arpanet) or brilliant individuals like Paul Baran, Vint Cerf, and Tim Berners-Lee, the internet's true origins lie in open-source, peer-to-peer networking - collaborative communities sharing intellectual labor without expectation of private rewards. This "dot-communism" ironically emerged from Cold War military-industrial projects yet produced something closer to Marxist ideals than communist regimes ever achieved. After an initial flourishing of crowd-sourcing and wiki-collaboration, a governmental fightback began. Security agencies in America and elsewhere were revealed to be spying electronically on citizens while lying about it, using "secret interpretations of the law" to justify their actions. Even Wikipedia succumbed to authoritarianism, appointing privileged editors who often became "ruthlessly partisan dogmatists," damaging the value of crowd-sourcing. The blockchain technology underlying bitcoin could revolutionize society as profoundly as the internet itself by eliminating middlemen from commerce and enabling direct global exchange. Applications already emerging include Twister (a censorship-resistant Twitter alternative), Namecoin (decentralized internet naming), Storj (blockchain-based file storage), and Ethereum (a platform for "distributed autonomous organizations"). These innovations could create truly ownerless firms - imagine summoning a driverless taxi owned by a distributed computer network that has independently raised funds and acquired vehicles. As Andreas Antonopoulos argues, unlike corruptible centralized systems, these decentralized institutions are inherently resilient. The internet is fundamentally transforming politics by empowering ordinary citizens, undermining traditional power structures, and making bureaucracies increasingly obsolete. MP Douglas Carswell calls it "a coup d'etat against the tyranny of elite" control. When Daniel Hannan's 2009 speech criticizing Prime Minister Gordon Brown went viral on YouTube despite initial mainstream media silence, it demonstrated how collective wisdom now filters content instead of traditional gatekeepers. The twentieth century can be viewed through two contrasting lenses: as a series of wars, crises and calamities, or as a period of unprecedented improvement in human welfare. This paradox reveals a fundamental pattern: bad news typically comes from top-down, planned interventions (wars, revolutions, financial crises), while good news emerges from unplanned, bottom-up evolutionary processes (rising incomes, disease eradication, technological advances). The "general theory of evolution" - incremental change through recombination and selection - applies far beyond biology to morality, economy, culture, language, technology, and social institutions. Despite our obsession with designing change from above, the most constructive developments emerge organically from below.
