Pierre Alexeïevitch Kropotkine (1842–1921), auteur de La Conquête du pain, était un révolutionnaire anarchiste russe, géographe et le principal théoricien du communisme libertaire.

Né au sein de l'aristocratie russe, Kropotkine renonça à son héritage privilégié après que des expéditions géologiques en Sibérie eurent éveillé son engagement envers la justice sociale. La Conquête du pain (1892) articule sa vision d'une société décentralisée et sans État, fondée sur la coopération volontaire, la propriété commune et le principe de la distribution selon les besoins.

L'ouvrage révolutionnaire de Kropotkine, L'Entraide, un facteur de l'évolution (1902), a contesté le darwinisme social en démontrant que c'est la coopération, et non la compétition, qui moteur de l'évolution. Ses autres œuvres influentes incluent Paroles d'un révolté (1885), Champs, usines et ateliers (1899) et La Science moderne et l'anarchie (1913).
