Edith Wharton (1862–1937), auteure lauréate du prix Pulitzer pour Le Temps de l'innocence, fut une chroniqueuse incontournable de la société du Gilded Age et de ses complexités morales.

Née au sein de l'élite new-yorkaise, Wharton s'est appuyée sur sa perspective d'initiée pour façonner des romans explorant les tensions entre le désir individuel et les conventions sociales rigides. Ses œuvres, notamment Chez les heureux du monde et Ethan Frome, sont célèbres pour leur esprit satirique, leur profondeur psychologique et leurs critiques incisives de l'hypocrisie de la haute société.

Pionnière de la littérature, Wharton est devenue la première femme à remporter le prix Pulitzer de la fiction en 1921 pour Le Temps de l'innocence, qui dissèque les attentes étouffantes de l'aristocratie new-yorkaise des années 1870 à travers son histoire d'amour tragique.
