In the fog-shrouded streets of 1888 London, seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth leads a dangerous double life. By day, she's the perfect daughter of Lord Edmund Wadsworth, expected to master embroidery and prepare for marriage. By night, she secretly apprentices with her uncle, Dr. Jonathan Wadsworth, learning forensic medicine through cadaver dissections. "Human flesh yields more easily than anticipated," Audrey observes during one lesson, her clinical detachment masking fierce determination to prove her worth in this male-dominated field. When a series of brutal murders terrorizes London's Whitechapel district, Audrey seizes the opportunity to apply her unconventional education. Against her father's strict rules, she assists her uncle with the autopsy of Mary Ann Nichols-the first recognized victim of Jack the Ripper. "These women deserve justice regardless of their station in life," she insists, challenging Victorian society's dismissal of the victims as mere casualties of their lifestyle choices. At her uncle's forensic medicine class at Harrow School for Boys, Audrey meets Thomas Cresswell-brilliant, arrogant, and unnervingly perceptive. When he immediately sees through her disguise, their contentious relationship begins. "I'm not a prize to be won or a lamb to be protected," Audrey declares when Thomas questions her presence in such "unseemly" surroundings-a sentiment that becomes her battle cry throughout the story.
