Just as I refuse to discard my comfortable old slippers despite my wife's protests, I believe sex needn't decline with age. "Sex in the winter" refers to enjoying satisfying intimacy in your forties, fifties, sixties and beyond. Though some couples drift apart sexually, what age takes away it often compensates for in other qualities. Our bodies may not be as tight, but our vision isn't as sharp either! While stamina and flexibility decrease, we gain decades of experience pleasing one specific person, better control over our responses, and the ability to intuitively read our spouse's reactions. Expect change as you age. Men lose hair and gain weight while women experience gravity's effects on breasts and face, requiring more lubrication during sex. Since everything about you changes with time, sex naturally changes too. The intensity and pleasure doesn't need to diminish, but how you approach it will need revision. Like Michael Jordan who had to adapt his game as he aged, you'll need to find new ways to "score." In your youth, erections came easily-reading a magazine or jumping in a pool was enough. Now they'll need cultivation and maintenance. Your wife will need to provide more direct stimulation than before. Erections won't be as firm ("pine" instead of "oak"), and you may experience sex without ejaculation as you age. Recovery time will slow dramatically-instead of multiple sessions in one night, you might need hours or days between climaxes. The upside? You'll last longer during intercourse, matching your wife's preference for slower, more languid lovemaking. Menopause marks a dramatic turning point in female sexuality, shifting focus from potential conception to pure intimacy and pleasure. There's no biological reason for women to lose interest in sex during this time-many feel more sexually invigorated after menopause. While estrogen drops, causing symptoms like hot flashes that might temporarily reduce sexual interest, many women find new sexual freedom once children leave home. As vaginal walls become thinner and drier, lubrication becomes essential. Regular sexual activity helps maintain sexual fitness-"use it or lose it" applies here. Picture an elderly couple walking arm-in-arm at the mall, supporting each other, sharing treats, wiping each other's mouths before kissing. After decades together, they're two halves of one whole. They may not be sexual gymnasts anymore, but their faces show contentment and happiness. One-night stands can't compare to making love to the same person a thousand times. Sex in winter becomes nearly miraculous when preceded by sex in spring, summer, and fall-all with the same beloved partner. My prayer for you is to fully experience all the joys, delights and pleasures your Creator designed for you in sexual intimacy. I want you to take your sex life to new heights, because a growing sexual relationship strengthens your marriage, making you better parents, more faithful believers, more productive community members-even better people. Good, healthy sex energizes us physically, relationally, psychologically and spiritually. Your sexual feast might sometimes be gourmet, other times fast food, sometimes just dessert-but it's all good!
