Orientalism is a style of thought based upon an ontological and epistemological distinction made between 'the Orient' and (most of the time) 'the Occident.'
Orientalism can be discussed and analyzed as the corporate institution for dealing with the Orient—dealing with it by making statements about it, authorizing views of it, describing it, by teaching it, settling it, ruling over it: in short, Orientalism as a Western style for dominating, restructuring, and having authority over the Orient.
Orientalism is never far from what Denys Hay has called the idea of Europe, a collective notion identifying 'us' Europeans as against all 'those' non-Europeans.
My contention is that without examining Orientalism as a discourse one cannot possibly understand the enormously systematic discipline by which European culture was able to manage—and even produce—the Orient politically, sociologically, militarily, ideologically, scientifically, and imaginatively during the post-Enlightenment period.
Europeans viewed the Orient primarily as their own invention.

Edward W. Said (1935–2003) était un chercheur en littérature, critique culturel et intellectuel public palestino-américain, célèbre pour son ouvrage révolutionnaire L'Orientalisme, une critique séminale des représentations occidentales du Moyen-Orient et de l'Asie.

Professeur de littérature comparée à l'université de Columbia, Said a fusionné son expertise interdisciplinaire et son expérience vécue d'exilé palestinien pour remettre en question les récits eurocentrés dans le milieu universitaire, les médias et la géopolitique. Son analyse de « l'orientalisme » en tant que système de pouvoir culturel ayant justifié la domination coloniale a révolutionné les études postcoloniales et reste fondamentale dans l'ensemble des disciplines des sciences humaines.

Said est l'auteur de plus de 20 livres influents reliant politique et culture, notamment Culture et Impérialisme (1993), qui étend sa critique aux empires mondiaux, et La Question de Palestine (1979), un ouvrage charnière sur la politique au Moyen-Orient. Ses mémoires, Entre deux mondes (1999), explorent l'identité à travers les contextes arabe et occidental.

Défenseur fervent des droits des Palestiniens, il a siégé au Conseil national palestinien tout en maintenant une production académique rigoureuse. Traduit dans plus de 35 langues, L'Orientalisme s'est vendu à des millions d'exemplaires à travers le monde et est fréquemment classé parmi les ouvrages universitaires les plus marquants du XXe siècle.
