His refinement appealed to Iranians who had grown to despise clerical hypocrisy, as they watched revolutionaries who had displaced the shah's cronies slip into their places, enriching themselves through oil wealth while ordinary citizens struggled. Despite revolutionary promises of economic solutions, real per capita income declined while clerics established themselves in luxurious north Tehran homes and expensive foreign cars. In 1998-1999, Iran experienced a flowering of open debate and press freedom some optimistically called a "Tehran Spring." Though I sometimes contemplate slowing down, having missed enjoying my daughters' childhoods, I will continue my work until Iran changes and people like me are no longer needed to protect Iranians from their government.
