Since people rarely understand their own motivations, designers must look beyond what users say they want to observe what they actually do. Methods like user narratives, the "5 Whys" technique, and empathy maps help uncover the core emotions driving behavior.
Instagram's success stems from understanding its users' triggers. Initially, external triggers like friend recommendations drove adoption. With repeated use, Instagram formed strong associations with internal triggers-particularly the fear of losing special moments and FOMO (fear of missing out). Companies can also boost users' motivation or ability by understanding mental shortcuts called heuristics. The scarcity effect explains why we value identical cookies more when they appear scarce. The framing effect shows how context shapes perception-wine tasters reported greater enjoyment when told they were drinking expensive wine, even when tasting the same wine multiple times. The anchoring effect reveals how we fixate on one piece of information when making decisions, while the endowed progress effect demonstrates that people are more likely to complete tasks when they feel they've already made progress.

Not all variable rewards work equally well. Mahalo.com's question-and-answer forum offered monetary rewards for good answers but ultimately failed to retain users, while Quora thrived without offering any financial incentives. This demonstrates that rewards must align with users' actual motivations. Gamification elements only work when they scratch the user's genuine itch.
Products must also maintain users' sense of autonomy. When Quora revealed users' browsing history without consent, they sparked a revolt. People resist being told what to do-psychologists call this reactance. Successful products maintain users' sense of choice rather than coercion.

The escalation of commitment phenomenon shows how our brains do strange things when we invest effort-from playing video games until exhaustion to switching political allegiances. The more users invest time and effort into a product, the more they value it-our labor leads to love.
In Ariely's origami study, people valued their own paper creations five times higher than others did, nearly matching expert-made valuations. This "IKEA effect" explains why the furniture retailer's self-assembly model works so well-customers irrationally value products they've built themselves.
Our past behaviors strongly predict future actions.
