The Language We're Meant to Speak
Learning a new language requires immersion. You begin by translating everything from your native tongue, but true fluency happens when you start thinking, dreaming, and interpreting life through the new language without mental translation. Gospel fluency works the same way.
Many Christians speak what Vanderstelt calls "gospelish"-occasionally sprinkling gospel terms into conversations without true fluency. They've memorized phrases but haven't learned to interpret all of life through the gospel lens. This partial fluency creates a disconnect between Sunday beliefs and Monday realities.
One summer, an intern observed something remarkable about Vanderstelt's ministry team: "You guys talk about Jesus all the time! Every day, every meeting, every situation." She explained that her home church occasionally mentioned Jesus but focused more on self-improvement principles. Through continuous exposure to Christ-centered conversation, she came to truly know and love Jesus.
Gospel fluency develops through immersion in a Jesus-saturated community. Like language learning, it requires both formal training in the basics and regular practice in everyday contexts. When believers constantly speak gospel truths into everything-from workplace frustrations to family conflicts-the gospel gradually becomes their native tongue.
The transformation is profound. Those growing in gospel fluency experience ongoing renewal as gospel truths reshape their thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and actions. The gospel becomes the lens through which they interpret all of life, bringing about their regeneration, justification, adoption, sanctification, and eventual glorification.
This immersion doesn't happen in isolation. We need communities where Jesus is the central focus of every conversation and gathering. Without this environment, we remain spiritual tourists, occasionally visiting gospel territory but never making it our home.

The Power That Changes Everything
Many Christians have a minimalist understanding of salvation, thinking it merely means praying a prayer to avoid hell after death. However, God's salvation is far more comprehensive and powerful.
The gospel isn't just doctrine or history-it's the dynamic power of God that created the universe, parted the Red Sea, and raised Jesus from the dead. This same power is available to believers through Christ and the Holy Spirit. We were completely powerless-dead in sin, enemies of God, and slaves to Satan-unable to save ourselves in any way.
Salvation works in three dimensions: we have been saved from sin's penalty, we are being saved from sin's power, and we will be saved from sin's presence. Understanding this full scope of salvation is crucial for gospel fluency.
Jesus's perfect life is equally essential as his death. Without his sinless life, his death would have no saving power. Jesus's life reveals God's righteousness in human form and fulfills the standard of righteousness on our behalf. As Christ (not his surname but his title as God's anointed King), Jesus demonstrated his authority to rescue us from darkness and bring us into his kingdom of light.
At the cross, the perfect Son of God became sin for us so we might become God's righteousness. Jesus atoned for our sins, paying our debt and satisfying God's wrath. Through his death, we're reconciled to God, transformed from enemies to beloved children. His death removed not only the guilt of sin but also sin's power over us.
Jesus's resurrection proves he destroyed sin and death's power. After rising, Jesus ascended to the Father's right hand where he continually intercedes for us. God sent his Spirit to wake us from spiritual death, convict us of sin, make gospel truths clear, grant repentance and faith, and bring new life. Through the Spirit, we're born again and become new creations with a new nature, identity, and purpose.
The gospel is the good news of Jesus's life, death, burial, and resurrection that saves and brings God's rule into our lives, changing us from inside out.
Chapitre 4
We Talk About What We Love
Many Christians struggle to share Jesus with others because they lack love. When you truly experience God's love in Jesus-realizing He suffered and died for us while we were His enemies-you can't contain it. We naturally talk about what most affects and changes us.
Think about when you're in love, like Jeff was with his wife Jayne. You can't stop talking about the object of your affection. First-time parents constantly document their baby's every move. Sports fans, bargain hunters, and people passionate about their work all talk extensively about what they love. Jesus said it's from the overflow of the heart that the mouth speaks.
Not only do we talk about what we love, but we also grow to love what we talk about. When affection grows cold, as Jeff experienced in his marriage, the solution is to start pursuing and talking about what you once loved. By intentionally remembering Jayne's beauty, godliness, and kindness, Jeff rekindled his affection for her.
Similarly, to grow in love for Jesus, we must talk about him more. The Holy Spirit, who knows Jesus best, helps us see his greatness. Reading the Gospels yearly helps us observe Jesus's actions, kindness, and love for the broken. By regularly remembering how Jesus first loved us and changed our lives, our affections for him grow stronger.
We also naturally share what impresses us and what effectively changes our lives. Whether it's CrossFit, the Paleo Diet, or financial strategies, we talk about what works. The gospel works powerfully-it forgives, heals, fills us with love and power, and transforms lives completely.
Jeff illustrates this with the Seattle Seahawks' 2014 Super Bowl victory, noting how fans needed no training to proclaim this good news-they couldn't stop talking about it. The gospel story is infinitely greater: we were enemies of God, enslaved to sin, but Jesus lived perfectly and conquered sin, Satan, and death through his resurrection. When we truly believe and experience this victory, we naturally tell everyone about this best news there is.
Chapitre 5
Everyone Is an Unbeliever
"I'm an unbeliever. So are you." With these striking words, Vanderstelt challenges our comfortable categories. While there are those who have been regenerated as children of God and others who aren't yet, we all have places in our lives where we don't believe God.
Even as a pastor for over twenty-five years, Vanderstelt struggles with unbelief daily-moments when he doesn't trust God's word is true or His work is sufficient. When his wife points out his shortcomings, he hears "failure" in his head. When his children show disinterest in Bible discussions, he thinks "bad father." Despite Jesus dying to change his identity from sinner to saint, he forgets or simply doesn't believe what Jesus has said about him and done for him.
We all struggle with unbelief because God's message can sound unbelievable, and we slip in and out of confidence that what Jesus has done is sufficient for today. Our behaviors reveal what we truly believe. Adam and Eve began as image bearers of God but chose to believe the Devil's lie rather than God's word. Their misplaced faith produced the rotten fruit of sin, affecting every part of their being and behavior, resulting in guilt, shame, and fear.
Too often when helping others change, we target behavior rather than belief. We use the consequences of sin to try stopping sin itself. For example, using shame to address wrongdoing only teaches people to sin differently. When God pursued Adam and Eve after they sinned, He didn't say "Shame on you!" but asked where they were and why they felt they needed to hide. He addressed their beliefs as revealed through actions.
Unbelief takes three forms: lacking truth about God, believing lies about Him, or failing to put faith in what we know to be true. Without knowing God, there can be no salvation or transformation. Jesus said eternal life is knowing God and Jesus Christ. The gospel reveals God through Jesus's life, ministry, death, and resurrection.
Our behavior reflects our beliefs-we resemble who we worship. If we're unforgiving, we don't truly believe in God's forgiveness. If we're stingy, we don't trust God's generosity. If we're anxious, we don't believe in God's sovereignty. Growing in gospel fluency requires growing in knowledge of God as revealed through Jesus.
Chapitre 6
From Fruit to Root
Vanderstelt opens this chapter with a powerful personal story: finding his wife Jayne standing in their kitchen in her bathrobe, paralyzed by overwhelming anxiety about their children's safety and spiritual well-being. This raw, vulnerable moment became a teaching opportunity that illustrated a fundamental principle of spiritual formation: the visible fruit of our lives inevitably grows from the hidden roots of our faith. Our external manifestations - whether thoughts, emotions, or behaviors - originate from deep internal beliefs. Jesus himself taught this principle, explaining that what truly defiles us proceeds not from external sources but from our hearts - the seat of our beliefs, motives, and core convictions.
In his discipleship work, Vanderstelt employs a systematic approach using four progressive questions that help people understand their identity and purpose: (1) Who is God? - examining God's character and nature; (2) What has God done? - exploring God's actions in history and our lives; (3) Who am I in light of God's work? - understanding our identity in Christ; and (4) How should I live? - determining appropriate responses to these truths. However, when diagnosing areas of unbelief, he strategically reverses this sequence, working backward from visible symptoms to root causes: first examining current experiences and behaviors, then beliefs about identity, followed by understanding of God's actions, and finally core beliefs about God's nature.
The author emphasizes that when our lives produce works of the flesh - such as anxiety, fear, anger, or control - rather than the fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience - it typically indicates unbelief in fundamental gospel truths. Using Jayne's situation as an example, he illustrated this concept by drawing a tree diagram on a napkin, helping her visualize how her anxiety, fear, worry, and desire for control were actually fruit hanging from her tree of life, all stemming from deeper root beliefs about God and herself.
This transformative process requires more than surface-level behavior modification. It demands both a thorough knowledge of the gospel and regular immersion in Scripture to effectively speak God's truth into our daily circumstances. Vanderstelt emphasizes that as we're increasingly transformed by the gospel, our conversation naturally shifts to reflect these changes, since humans invariably discuss what impacts them most profoundly. However, he strongly cautions against attempting this journey in isolation. True gospel fluency develops within the context of a gospel-centered community where believers can practice, encourage, and correct one another in applying gospel truths to daily life situations.
The author also notes that this process often requires patience and persistence, as deeply rooted beliefs don't change overnight. Regular examination of our responses to life's challenges provides opportunities to identify areas where our gospel understanding needs strengthening or correction.
Chapitre 7
The War of the Mind
We are at war-not against flesh and blood, but against invisible spiritual forces. Our enemies are the Devil, the world, and the flesh, and we fight them with spiritual weapons that have divine power. The gospel is our power for salvation in this battle.
Satan opposes God as our adversary, the world stands against God's rule, and the flesh orients us toward self-worship. Those who belong to Christ have been set free from being "in the flesh" and given power through the Spirit to overcome these enemies.
In this battle, we must take four crucial steps:
First, capture and examine your thoughts-subduing them like caging a ferocious animal for examination. Ask yourself if what you're thinking aligns with the gospel's good news. Our enemy fills our minds with lies about God, accusations against ourselves, temptations with empty promises, and divisive thoughts that isolate us.
Second, bring the thought into submission. Ask the Spirit to help you determine if it aligns with what's true of God, Jesus' work, and your identity through faith in Jesus. The Holy Spirit guides us into truth, teaches us about Jesus, and convicts us of unbelief.
Third, consider the fruit. The Spirit produces fruit that resembles Jesus's life: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control." When you're not experiencing this fruit, your mind isn't submitted to Christ.
Fourth, fight with gospel truths. For guilt or shame, remember Jesus at the cross saying, "Father, forgive them." For struggling with sin, recall the resurrection where Jesus condemned sin's power. For feelings of inadequacy, remember Jesus's perfect life lived in our place and the Father's words: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
This battle requires ongoing dependence on the Spirit through prayer. As Paul writes, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind" (Rom. 12:2). If you want to become gospel fluent, prepare for war.
Chapitre 8
Jesus Is the Better Everything
When someone complains about work, typical responses include commiseration or encouragement to quit. But a gospel community brings good news to difficult situations by asking: How does the gospel address this? What gospel truth have we forgotten? How is Jesus better than what we want?
We remind each other that apart from Jesus, we deserve death, yet through Him we've received eternal life. This perspective shift-from focusing on what we think we deserve at work to recognizing what we've already received in Christ-transforms our attitude. Jesus has given us the ultimate promotion from slavery to sin to being seated with Him in heavenly places. While earthly bosses may not recognize our work, Jesus speaks better words about us to the Father.
As a gospel-fluent community, we remind each other that Jesus is "the better" in every relationship. He's not just the better boss but the better worker, friend, and Son who perfectly obeyed the Father. Parents need this truth when they burden children with unrealistic expectations, trying to live vicariously through them. There's only one perfect child-Jesus-and our children need to know this.
To practice pointing one another to Jesus as "the better everything" in our groups, we should establish four key questions: (1) Who is God/Jesus? (2) What has he done or what is he doing? (3) Who are we in light of that work? and (4) How should we live in light of who we are?
To see Jesus as "the better everything," we must understand the Bible's overarching narrative. Many Christians read Scripture as disconnected stories rather than one unified story of God's redeeming love. The entire Bible points to Jesus as its center-he's the fulfillment of every longing and the completion of everything lacking.
Jesus is the true and better everything-better Adam, Abel, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Job, David, Esther, and Jonah. He's the better ark, manna, water, wine, temple, priest, and sacrifice. He's the better spouse, parent, son, and boss. Don't settle for substitutes or try to be one yourself. Jesus did, does, and will do better than anyone or anything.
Chapitre 9
Listen and Learn Before You Speak
Vanderstelt laments how Christians often miss opportunities by talking at people rather than listening to their hearts. He urges believers to become people of understanding who draw out others' stories before sharing the gospel.
Jesus exemplified this with the Samaritan woman, beginning from a humble posture and making short, provocative statements that invited her to reveal her heart's longings. Unlike Christians who overwhelm with words and answers to unasked questions, Jesus listened deeply before showing how he could satisfy her soul's thirst.
Jesus masterfully drew out the Samaritan woman's heart through humble questioning and attentive listening. Starting by asking her for water created space for her to pour out her soul. Christians often overwhelm people with words, assuming we know what they need, when listening would reveal their true heart condition.
While sharing our testimonies is valuable for gospel fluency, we must balance speaking with listening to address others' specific needs. Francis Schaeffer wisely spent fifty-five minutes of each hour asking questions before sharing truth in the final five minutes. Every human hungers for God and seeks satisfaction-often at the wrong wells. By listening attentively, we can discern their heart's longings and show how Jesus offers living water for their specific thirst.
To speak the gospel fluently to others, we must listen for their overarching stories. Everyone has a "gospel story" they believe, though it may not be the true gospel. These stories follow the Creation-Fall-Redemption-New Creation pattern wired into our hearts, appearing in novels, movies, songs, and even commercials.
When listening to people, Vanderstelt suggests identifying: where they find their identity (Creation), what they blame for life's problems (Fall), what they look to as their savior (Redemption), and what transformation they hope for (New Creation). By discerning someone's narrative, we can share how Jesus fulfills their deepest longings in ways their false saviors never could.
Chapitre 10
Making Jesus the Hero of Our Story
Many Christians make themselves the hero of their stories rather than Jesus. When sharing testimonies, people often detail their sins extensively, mention Jesus briefly as forgiving them, then focus on their struggles to be better Christians. This makes them, not Jesus, the central character.
Vanderstelt emphasizes that Jesus doesn't wait for invitations-He actively invades enemy territory and rescues us from sin. To help people make Jesus the hero, Vanderstelt uses various storytelling methods, including "Instagram Stories" where participants draw twelve frames representing their journey, or having people build around three key life pillars.
He also teaches people to frame their stories using the four movements of God's grand narrative:
The Creation movement addresses identity-who we believe we are and why we exist. Before knowing Jesus, and sometimes even after, many find identity in parental approval, work success, appearance, or possessions rather than seeing themselves as God sees them.
The Fall movement explores brokenness-what has destroyed or is destroying our identity and purpose. Everyone believes in a dominant problem keeping them from being who they were made to be, often blaming others. Vanderstelt teaches people to take ownership of their culpability rather than remaining victims.
The Redemption movement focuses on rescue and deliverance. Everyone seeks a savior-better relationships, exercise regimens, career success, or money-but only Jesus addresses our real problem of sin. Vanderstelt encourages people to share how they discovered Jesus is a better Savior than whatever they previously trusted.
The New Creation movement addresses transformation and hope. Everyone longs for change and a happy ending. This final part of our stories should share how Jesus has changed us and continues to change us, along with our ultimate hope. The gospel isn't just about past salvation but includes good news about what's happening now and what will happen in the future.
By structuring personal testimonies this way, believers can better position Jesus as the hero rather than themselves. After sharing stories, Vanderstelt encourages listeners to reflect and ask questions, creating opportunities for those with gospel fluency to draw out the heart through thoughtful questions that help people make Jesus the hero of their stories.
Chapitre 11
Grow in Love and Wisdom
Vanderstelt's hope is that through his book readers have not only gained knowledge about God's grace and mercy but have grown to love Jesus more deeply. Gospel fluency flows from a transformed heart-you talk most about what you love most.
His concern is that these tools might become weapons rather than healing balms if wielded without love. As Paul teaches, we must speak truth in love, or our proclamation becomes meaningless noise.
True wisdom isn't just increased knowledge, which can lead to pride. Rather, wisdom applies knowledge to do the right thing, at the right time, with the right motive, in the right way. It's gracious, loving, kind, and gentle. When sharing the gospel, Peter calls for gentleness and respect, while Paul instructs our speech to be gracious and "seasoned with salt."
God-given wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, merciful, impartial, and sincere. Like Solomon who asked only for wisdom and received everything else with it, Vanderstelt has found that daily asking God for wisdom has transformed his life and created opportunities to share the gospel.
This wisdom-filled approach creates unexpected opportunities to discuss Jesus. Vanderstelt shares how his neighbor Amy, though rejecting the gospel, asked him to teach about manhood at her school where 85% of students lacked fathers at home. She chose him because she'd observed how he treated his family and respected women. During the discussion, when one boy mentioned Jesus as an example of manhood, he explained that unlike others who were killed, Jesus chose to die for his enemies-for sinners like us.
Ultimately, Jesus Christ is the wisdom of God. If you want wisdom, you must get Jesus. Ask God for wisdom and he will give you Jesus. And if you get Jesus, you'll get everything you need for every part of your life-he is the good news for everyday stuff. That's the heart of this book: get wisdom from Jesus and you get everything else as well.
