This rebellion has broken our foundational relationships, stalling the twofold history of human life and leaving us prey to nothingness and death. While classical humanism ignored this reality, and modern existentialists remain defiant, the Church must continue declaring how profoundly humans endanger themselves. Finally, the decisive word is that humanity - though estranged, endangered and lost - is sustained by God. Despite our faithlessness, God remains faithful. Jesus Christ's death represents not just accusation and condemnation, but primarily the victory and establishment of God's grace. God has taken our fatal harvest upon Himself and planted new seed in our place. By becoming the true man in our stead, God has spoken His word of forgiveness, new commandment, resurrection, and eternal life. Here we see God's grace as pure, free, unmerited - and also enduring, triumphant, ruling and effective. This is not merely religious truth but universal truth, the human condition prior to all else. Christian proclamation is fundamentally gospel - joyous good news announcing that God's kingdom has already come.

It cannot be harmonized with other words, for there exists no second Word of God. It must be heard exclusively or not at all. Only in this exclusiveness is it truly the omnipotent, comforting Word. Third, in divine freedom - not blind fate, but the freedom of divine mercy and patience. This freedom gives us our freedom, asking that we place ourselves at its disposal in adoration. God's Word is true before we recognize it, and even when we reject it, we cannot help but give honor to its righteousness and mercy.

We cannot speak of God's Word's sovereignty without addressing ourselves and the decision of faith. We participate as recipients of His gift, included under the sovereignty of God's Word - supported, preserved, and moved by it. God's Word is the mediation between Himself and humanity. His Son has eternally made our nature His own, reigning at the Father's right hand in our flesh. He is not without us - He has us with Him, living our life in God's glory. Who are we with this inheritance? We are humans in the decision of faith. Everything else about us - our reason, sin, mortality, conscience - is secondary. In faith, we move toward that human nature united to Christ. The decision of faith is the human correspondent to the Word of God. Faith means "that with body and soul, both in living and dying, I am not my own but the possession of my faithful Savior Jesus Christ." I depend on God's Word, letting myself be nourished and ruled by Him. I grant Him rights over my pride and humility, letting His Word be loud while I remain quiet. This is our true humanity. Faith is always decision - choice, crisis, transition. We believe as those torn from unbelief yet standing on its rim. "I believe, O Lord, help my unbelief!" We trust instead of denying, surrender instead of asserting ourselves. Faith is our only true possibility. Fundamentally, it is not we ourselves who decide in faith. If we believe, we believe in the consummation of the sovereign act of God's Word - the work of the Holy Spirit happening to us. We have no power over it; it is not at our disposal. In faith we stand before God as forgiven sinners. We can only choose as those who have already been chosen! Yet because God Himself has decided about us, our faith must take the character of decision. The decision of faith happens on earth, in fear of divine judgment, requiring us to give specific exposition to God's command. We must obey, even when the accomplishment seems beyond our strength. It's better to appear presumptuous than to persist in neutrality under the guise of humility, which is already the decision of unbelief. No fundamental limits can be put on the decision of faith. Its compass must be as large as demanded by the sovereignty of God's Word. Woe to us if we arbitrarily limit it to mere intention or theological reflection, to the private realm or even just to the "realm of the Church"! A limited decision is not the decision of faith.

The Bible as God's Living Word: Authority and Interpretation

The Bible's authority cannot be established through external reasoning but must be understood as an analytical proposition expressing a fundamental reality: the Bible simply has a specific authority within the congregation of Jesus Christ. Like a child who can only affirm "this is my mother" when asked why, the Church can only affirm the Bible's authority as self-evident. This relationship between Bible and congregation is a given circumstance that cannot be proven but only witnessed to through repetition and affirmation. In the time between Christ's resurrection and return, Jesus Christ's presence and Lordship takes visible form in the witness of His chosen prophets and apostles. Though Christ's kingdom has no boundaries, the congregation founded on biblical witness is where His presence is acknowledged. The Bible is not merely one authority among many but the visible form of Christ's otherwise hidden presence. The biblical witnesses, despite being fallible humans limited by their times, possess a unique truth and validity because they testify to Jesus Christ as the center of all things. Their testimony, whether anticipating or proclaiming Christ, reveals the confrontation between the gracious God and sinful humanity as the central meaning of all existence. This witness has special authority precisely because of its subject matter and the witnesses' election and calling to this task. The Bible stands as the single normative form of God's Word. While many ideas about God exist, only one true knowledge comes from God's self-testimony. The Church acknowledges this uniquely visible and normative form of God's Word by establishing the biblical canon, confessing God's election of these witnesses. The Bible proves itself to be God's Word through its actual effect: it summons, comforts, and exhorts the Church in Christ's name, giving its proclamation freedom, direction, and fullness. This self-proof, called "the witness of the Holy Spirit," happens when biblical witness finds human hearing and produces obedient response. Where this occurs, the Church comes into being. Scripture interprets itself, possessing a clarity grounded in its authority. This clarity isn't an inherent property but emerges when biblical witness speaks and gains hearing. The Bible doesn't expound itself to passive listeners but draws them into active service of interpretation according to their capacities and faith. Though God's Word isn't at human disposal, its transparency becomes a gift placed in human hands, making exposition a necessary human task and activity for the Church's authentic existence.

The Church as Living Community: Event Rather Than Institution

To speak meaningfully of the Church requires consistently focusing on the living congregation of the living Lord Jesus Christ. Without this focus, even the most profound theological language about the Church as Christ's Body, Bride, City, or People becomes hollow. All discussions of church nature, unity, order, and mission lead nowhere unless centered on this concrete reality. The Church exists dynamically as an event happening between Christ's resurrection and His future return. In this unique historical interval, God gathers friends who witness to the world's reconciliation in Christ, heralding His victory over sin and death. The Church is not a static institution but a divine-human gathering that occurs as God's act reaching from heaven into the created world. The Church's essence is the event where people are placed together before the fact of the world's reconciliation in Christ, under both condemning grace and gracious judgment, summoned to thanksgiving and neighborly love. This peculiar togetherness forms the congregation of "saints" within general human history. The Church exists only as this dynamic human event. This essence manifests as Christ giving Himself to individuals, making Himself known as their Lord and the world's Lord. His sovereignty awakens free obedience, creating mutual relationships based not on constraint but on shared subordination to Him. The Church points to both Christ's sovereignty and the resulting free community. The Church happens when God's Word in Christ touches certain people so deeply that their entire existence becomes a corresponding answer. These people receive freedom to account for Christ's truth, His self-sacrifice, and His lordship as the Resurrected One. Unlike the world, where God's work remains merely objective, in the Church God's work awakens both as divine Word and human response. Though Christ lives "sitting on the right hand of God," His congregation exists in the midst of world history. The Church is divine regarding its Head but undeniably human as Christ's Body - an element of creaturely, threatened reality. Its existence is secured only from above, from God, not from its human members. The Church receives security, justification, sanctification, and preservation only through God's Word and Spirit, only in its Lord Jesus Christ. The Church's threatened existence demands not merely support or improvement but genuine renewal - a continual reformation corresponding to its original formation. Without this ongoing reformation, the Church falls into being non-Church. This renewal can come only from its living Lord Jesus Christ.

Christian Ethics: Living in Response to Grace

Ethics seeks to answer the question of dignity, correctness and excellence in human activity. Christian ethics specifically answers this question from the standpoint of Christian confession, not through human reasoning or conscience, but by hearing and responding to God's commandment. Unlike philosophical ethics, Christian ethics doesn't begin with reflection but with hearing - repeating what God has already said about human activity. It's connected to the history between God and man, particularly focused on man's active role in this divine-human drama. The foundational history for Christian ethics is breathtakingly simple yet profound: God became man in Jesus Christ, suffered and died as a condemned criminal, was raised from the dead, and thereby exalted all humanity to God's glory. This history of God's covenant and mercy calls out to human activity. The good, in Christian terms, is that human conduct which corresponds to God's action in this history - namely, thankfulness for God's grace. Evil is the opposite: conduct that contradicts or ignores this history, marked by unthankfulness toward God's grace. From this foundation flow all virtues and vices. In Christian ethics, conscience means knowing what God has done for us and knowing ourselves as God knows us. The Bible serves not as a law book but as the essential document of God's covenant history and the life conditions created by God's grace. Christian ethics moves through the world of human morals, testing everything and preserving only what best praises God's grace, often surprising conventional moral standards. Christian ethics finds clarity and meaning only in the context of God's history with humanity. It looks back to this divine-human encounter while Christian dogmatics looks ahead to human response. The two cannot be separated: "Christian work is the fruit of Christian faith, Christian law is the form of the Christian gospel, and Christian ethics is the imperative of the indicative of Christian dogmatics." Christian ethics emerges as the unity of work and prayer - work beginning in prayer, prayer ending in work. It calls upon God while seeking to live according to its petitions and praise. The primary acting subject is not human but divine: "God does something and does it in such a way that man is thereby called to do something in turn." God's call within the history between God and believers constitutes God's command. Human conduct becomes good when it corresponds to the indicative of God's grace, for what God has graciously done includes the divine imperative within itself.

At the 1949 Geneva conference on humanism, philosophers, historians, theologians and scientists engaged in open dialogue across diverse perspectives. While the gathering achieved human connection in an "inhuman era," it revealed profound disagreements about humanism's definition and purpose. Despite ten days of discussion, no unified vision emerged - only mutual stimulation without practical consensus. The conference revealed competing conceptions of humanism. Some viewed it as rooted in classical Western tradition - "cultivation of spirit and soul through familiarity with Greek and Roman literature." Others rejected this historical focus, arguing humanism meant openness to diverse cultural perspectives or simply "what we put into it." Some defined it as "critical reflection about man," while others equated it with specific political movements. Several distinct humanist visions emerged: a cosmopolitan humanism valuing the individual within free institutions; a view that man's distinguishing feature is his drive for change; a Marxist humanism identifying private ownership as the source of human alienation; a biological humanism celebrating man as reasoning matter; and German existentialism portraying man as transcending self-knowledge, finding freedom in personal decision-making amid technological threats. From a theological standpoint, both Catholic and Protestant representatives avoided promoting a "Christian humanism" - recognizing that terms ending in "ism" are inappropriate for theological language. The gospel isn't a principle, system, or moral philosophy, but "spirit and life." While the question of humanity is central to the gospel, theological understanding begins where humanisms end. Theology can understand various humanisms but must ultimately challenge them all as abstract programs. It neither competes with them nor offers an equivalent alternative, finding the very concept of humanism tainted with "a little godlessness and a little idolatry." Instead, Barth speaks of "the humanism of God" - not humanity originated by man, but God's friendliness to man as the source of all human rights and dignity. The conference revealed an ambiguous mixture of tired optimism and elegant pessimism, with few expressions of genuine joy or authentic despair. Notably absent was serious engagement with guilt or death, leaving the true condition of contemporary man unaddressed. Without "genuine, comforting certainty and hope," humanity cannot be truly seen. The concrete human exists only within the context determined by Christ's centrality - defined by his judgment and grace. "The true man for all time is the lost and rescued man who is seen in the mirror of Jesus Christ." Only through Jesus Christ can humanity's full depth of misery and dignity of hope be properly understood.

The church's mission resembles that of a letter carrier - delivering a message not of its own making, whose contents are not at its discretion. This message of the Incarnation's gracious mystery demands not grudging consternation but adoration. While the message's content remains fixed, its presentation requires "nimble, humble, questioning" Christians employing all their "power, faith, and skill." The Church's task is to deliver this message of God's free grace, and the Church's freedom is grounded in this task. This message must be delivered under divine commission, not as human observation or philosophy. It speaks of God - not human imagination but what has been "heard, learned, and repeated in the school of this God's own Word." The message comes from Christ Himself, who is both its subject and source. It cannot be forced into systems or philosophies, nor can it serve "arbitrarily chosen wishes, goals and plans." It must be announced "in Christ's place," in service to His word and work. The Church has nothing of its own to proclaim. It delivers this message "like a postman delivers his mail," without imposing its own interpretations. The Church is not asked about its adequacy for this task but must simply use what it has in service to the message. It need not worry about success but must "toss its seed about" with holy thoughtlessness, trusting the one who commissioned it. The Church exists by living for this commission, not as an end in itself. It has "no line of retreat into a churchly subjectivity." Its preaching, sacraments, exegesis, and dogmatics are all forms of "assault" - forward movement. It prays to work and works because it has prayed. The Church exists for the message of God's free grace, going "with it into the whole world" to make it concrete through relief work and bold political decisions. It delivers this message "to all people." The Church is not asked whether people accept it or whether it deserves their confidence. It has no diplomacy or strategy toward them. Like Jesus who "was moved with pity" for the people who were "tormented and exhausted like sheep without a shepherd," the Church must be moved by the same compassion. The Church "can be the Church only as the people's Church," existing for ordinary people with their serious and childish concerns, confused consciences, dullness and illusions. This message, even in its weakest forms, always has something original to say that people would hear nowhere else. Its "plain extraordinary character" is inexhaustible, establishing the Church's right to exist. It awakens the sleeping Church like "an incomparable trumpet" and produces "free Christians" who dare to begin fresh despite all worldly and churchly constraints. As long as such Christians arise, the Church will be freed again and again. The Church must rely on the message itself, not on secondary matters of ritual or constitution. "One thing only is necessary" - the free grace of God, which must be grasped anew in every generation.
