In China, despite official rejection of the "barbarian" Yuan Dynasty, many Mongol innovations in governance and commerce quietly persisted. The Mongol collapse also had unintended positive consequences. As direct east-west trade became more difficult, Europeans began seeking alternative routes to Asian markets-eventually leading to the age of maritime exploration. Columbus was searching for a route to the wealth of Cathay (China), described so tantalizingly by Marco Polo, when he stumbled upon the Americas.

"The real Genghis Khan," Weatherford argues, "was neither the bloodthirsty barbarian of Western imagination nor the flawless national hero of modern Mongolian patriotism.
