This part believed that if she became attractive, she'd be propositioned by men and lacked resources to say "no," potentially endangering her marriage. To establish communication with the unconscious part responsible for unwanted behavior, the client creates an unambiguous "yes-no" signal system through internal sensations. Once this communication channel is established, the therapist guides the client to distinguish between the unwanted pattern and the positive intention behind it. After establishing communication, the client engages their creative part to generate numerous alternative behaviors that could satisfy the same intention. The part running the unwanted pattern evaluates these alternatives and selects at least three that would work more effectively than the current behavior. The ecological check makes the reframing process elegant by recognizing that we are complex, balanced organisms. After new alternatives are selected, the client checks if any other parts object to these changes by being sensitive to any internal responses. If objections arise, the client establishes communication with the objecting part and cycles back through the process. If the old pattern reemerges, it's a signal to negotiate rather than a failure. The symptom becomes a useful indicator prompting appropriate responses, as demonstrated by a client who arranged to spend time playing but did her taxes instead. When she got a migraine, she contacted her part directly and discovered it wanted her to "go somewhere and have fun or else!"

   People think differently using three principal representational systems: visual (seeing images), auditory (hearing sounds), and kinesthetic (feeling sensations). When accessing auditory information, people typically look horizontally to either side. For kinesthetic accessing, they look down to their right. When people access information, they unconsciously activate motor programs related to the experience. For instance, when asked about driving a car, a person will subtly move their feet differently depending on whether they drive an automatic or stick shift. These physical movements reveal the process of accessing information, not content. Incongruity occurs when verbal and non-verbal messages contradict each other, like saying "everything worked great" while sighing and looking down. Therapists need multiple response options beyond just meta-commenting on the discrepancy. Alternatives include exaggerating the non-verbal component, mirroring the incongruity back, or responding with metaphor. People process information through systematic sequences called strategies. Most people have only three or four basic strategies, while flexible individuals may have a dozen. All sensory systems are processing information simultaneously, but only certain portions enter consciousness. Rather than labeling oneself as primarily visual, auditory, or kinesthetic, one should recognize their most developed system and work to develop the others with equal refinement. Good spellers universally use the same strategy: they visualize the word and verify accuracy with a kinesthetic check. Teaching this specific process, rather than content, allows anyone to become a good speller automatically.
