This isn't an attack on gender but an improvement, extending personal freedom rather than restricting it. We must reject the myth that women's and men's problems are disconnected. The real division isn't between genders but between those who recognize gender as socially constructed versus those who don't. The opportunity cost of maintaining our current system is immense-all the missing male contributions in nursing, caregiving, and education, and all the boys who never become the men they were meant to be. The world is becoming more "feminine" in that traditionally feminine skills like emotional intelligence are increasingly valued. EQ (emotional intelligence) is now recognized as nearly twice as important as IQ for success. Teaching boys emotional hygiene is as crucial as teaching physical hygiene-not to make them "more feminine" but to prepare them for modern life. Mindful masculinity offers a solution-becoming conscious of one's internal dialogue and behaviors, examining which masculine traits serve us and which don't. It means "getting masculinity off cruise control" by recognizing male behaviors as learned rather than innate. This approach requires courage-facing pain and taking responsibility rather than transmitting unprocessed trauma. As one man put it: "Instead of trying to control the world around us, we need to do a better job of controlling the storm inside us." I'm not telling men what to get rid of; I'm asking everyone to think deeply about what gendered habits they're holding onto. Think of it as decluttering-if holding onto ideas like women being more emotional or boys not needing intimacy isn't working, throw away that gendered baggage. The freedom that comes from questioning these assumptions benefits everyone, allowing men to access their full humanity rather than forcing others to manage their emotions for them. The path forward isn't about destroying masculinity but about reimagining it-creating space for men to be both strong and vulnerable, both providers and nurturers, both independent and connected.
