We've been here before - Putnam describes America in the early 1900s facing similar challenges: severe wealth gaps, political enemies, urban population surges while rural areas declined, and polarized politicians predicting America's demise. Yet beneath that surface, things were getting MESSSy. Two alcoholics in Akron started Alcoholics Anonymous, which has since helped millions worldwide. The early 20th century saw an explosion of civic organizations: the Junior League, NAACP, Rotary Club, and countless others emerged between 1900-1970. Then things started falling apart again after Watergate. But Putnam believes we're on the cusp of another grassroots upswing - and so does Mann. Bottom-up leadership is essential, but we still need functioning institutions. The divisionists currently in power need to be voted out and replaced with leaders from the Rooftop. History shows this works - during the early 1900s upswing, Teddy Roosevelt responded to grassroots movements by enacting nation-changing reforms. Bottom-up initiatives can show top-down leaders how to lead - it's how America has always worked. According to research by More in Common, only 33 percent of Americans form the extreme left and right wings of political opinion. The remaining two-thirds - a democratic supermajority - comprise what they call "the exhausted majority." These Americans aren't necessarily centrists with middle-ground positions. Their views on contentious issues are as diverse as their backgrounds. What unites them is being fed up with polarization, feeling overlooked in public discourse, maintaining flexibility in their views, avoiding ideological rigidity, and believing in common ground. Currently, the divisionists dominate the conversation while the exhausted majority checks out from political exhaustion. But this is changing - thousands of movements are working to improve civil society, expand human connection, and deepen social capital. As Jonathan Haidt says, "We cannot expect Congress and the tech companies to save us. We must change ourselves and our communities." Nobody is coming to save us - and that's fine. The power to create change lies within ourselves and our ability to connect authentically with others. By understanding our human nature, finding meaning in our lives, managing our emotions, building social connections, sharing our stories, and embracing our struggles, we can rise above the Churn and lead from the Rooftop. The exhausted majority is finding its voice, and when it does, it will drown out the divisionists, suppress the Churn, and lead us all into better days.
