As anthropologist Robin Fox explains, "The brain's business is not to give us an accurate or objective view of the world, but a useful one." We overcome our natural biases through collective effort: developing social norms of truth-telling, establishing procedures of shared inquiry like scientific method, and creating institutions of law and democracy where claims are challenged. Despite cultural emphasis on "trusting yourself," our instincts often mislead us. Timothy Wilson's research shows we're poor predictors of our own behavior-friends or informed strangers often have clearer insights about our actions. Our privileged access to thoughts creates information overload, preventing us from seeing patterns in our behavior. We consistently overestimate our willpower regarding diets or exercise, underestimate attraction to unsuitable partners, and profess motivations that don't exist. The "feeling of knowing"-that warm rush of certainty when holding a belief-is a neurological illusion, as Robert Burton argues. This feeling encourages closed-mindedness, allowing biases to rule unchallenged. Richard Feynman wisely noted, "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool." The story of Quesalid, a Kwakiutl shaman recorded by anthropologist Franz Boas, illustrates our complex relationship with deception. Initially skeptical of shamans' healing practices, Quesalid infiltrated their ranks to expose their tricks-the blood-soaked eagle down they pretended to extract from patients. Yet when circumstances forced him to perform a healing ritual himself, the patient recovered. Despite knowing his technique was mere sleight-of-hand, Quesalid became renowned for his healing powers. Like actors who half-forget they're acting, we all perform social roles while simultaneously believing in them. Erving Goffman observed that ordinary social interaction involves improvisation around ready-made expressions-we're all actors who've forgotten we're acting. Our "life-lies," as Ibsen called them, aren't merely dishonest escapes from reality but expressions of our creative nature and freedom. Perhaps wisdom lies in accepting both our need for reality and our need for fiction, wearing our masks with equanimity while remembering they are masks-"to believe in a fiction which you know to be a fiction." As Wallace Stevens wrote, "The final belief is to believe in a fiction, which you know to be a fiction, there being nothing else. The exquisite truth is to know that it is a fiction and that you believe it willingly."
