Diana Gabaldon is an American novelist whose work spans historical fiction, romance, fantasy, and adventure. She is best known for the bestselling Outlander series, beginning with Outlander in 1991, and for related Lord John books. Her novels have sold millions worldwide and inspired a successful television adaptation.
Diana Gabaldon came to fiction by way of science, computing, and teaching rather than a conventional literary apprenticeship. Born in Arizona and raised in Flagstaff, she studied zoology at Northern Arizona University, marine biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and quantitative behavioral ecology at Northern Arizona University, then spent about a dozen years as an Arizona State University professor. Before her fiction career took hold, she wrote scientific articles and textbooks, edited computing reference material, founded Science Software Quarterly, and scripted Walt Disney comics.
