Nacido: March 22, 1947 – Newburgh, New York, United States
James Patterson is an American author known for fast-paced thrillers, crime fiction, and young adult novels. He is best known for the Alex Cross, Women’s Murder Club, and Maximum Ride series. Among the world’s bestselling writers, he has sold hundreds of millions of books and won the Edgar Award.
James Patterson grew up in Newburgh, New York, and studied English at Manhattan College, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1969, before earning a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University in 1970. He entered advertising rather than academia, starting at J. Walter Thompson as a copywriter and eventually rising to lead its North American division. For years he wrote before and after work, treating fiction as a parallel vocation until The Thomas Berryman Number, published in 1976, won the Edgar Award for a first novel. The deeper turning point came later: after the early success of Alex Cross and his own realization that writing, not advertising, was the lane he wanted to stay in, he left the ad business in 1996 to become a full-time author.
