She is best known for A Little Life, alongside The People in the Trees and To Paradise. Hanya Yanagihara was born in Los Angeles in 1974 and grew up across a shifting American map shaped by her father’s medical career, living at different times in Hawaii, New York, Maryland, California, and Texas before returning to Honolulu for high school. That itinerant childhood helped form the alert, observational temperament that later distinguished both her fiction and her editorial work. She studied English at Smith College, graduating in 1995, and moved soon afterward to New York, choosing publishing over the medical path that had surrounded her family life.
