    This rule addresses a fundamental conflict in your brain architecture between the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala. While the prefrontal cortex manages long-term goals, the amygdala often views complex tasks as threats, leading to hesitation. By keeping a task under one hundred and twenty seconds, you avoid triggering the amygdala's resistance, allowing your brain to focus on the simple act of starting rather than the intimidating end goal.

    A gateway habit is a scaled-down version of a larger goal that serves as a productive path forward. For example, putting on your running shoes is the gateway habit for a five-mile run. Mastering these small entry points allows you to build momentum without the mental drag of effort. Once you master the act of showing up through these tiny actions, you naturally progress toward your more complex long-term objectives.
