Economics is not just about money, stocks, or complex spreadsheets. It is the study of the use of scarce resources which have alternative uses, and the consequences of the choices we make.
Thomas Sowell, Basic Economics

The core focus of this podcast is the study of how we use scarce resources that have alternative uses. Rather than focusing solely on money or spreadsheets, it explores the fundamental reality that life presents us with limited options. By understanding the logic of scarcity, listeners can better grasp how individuals and societies make difficult choices when they cannot satisfy every desire or need simultaneously.
In economic thinking, scarcity is a permanent feature of the human condition rather than a temporary shortage like a famine. It means there is never enough of a resource to fully satisfy everyone who wants it. This applies to physical materials, such as wood used for houses versus bridges, and even to billionaires who must still face the scarcity of time, which remains our most finite resource.
Economic trade-offs occur because every resource has alternative uses. When you choose to allocate a resource toward one goal, you inherently give up the opportunity to use it for something else. For example, time spent listening to a podcast is time that cannot be spent sleeping. Basic Economics teaches that because we cannot do everything, we must constantly navigate these trade-offs to manage resource allocation effectively.
