America's Strange Breed

Two persistent problems have plagued American democracy: the myth of exceptionalism and the denial of class. Our society still measures human worth by land value and location, which determines access to privileged schools, safe neighborhoods, and better infrastructure. The class system has always tracked across the land with the "pioneering set," as speculators controlled good land distribution while forcing poor squatters off their property. America transfers wealth through bloodlines more rigidly than modern European nations - Americans pass on 50% of their wealth to children compared to just 15% in Denmark. Statistical measurement confirms that the best predictor of success remains the class status of one's forebears. The economy cannot provide employment for everyone, leaving poor whites as the "mudsills" who form the bottom labor pool, cleaning toilets, working mines, or slaughtering animals. From colonial times through today, the white poor have been renamed but never disappeared: waste people, crackers, lubbers, hillbillies, rednecks, trailer trash. They're blamed for living on bad land as though they had choices, depicted as slothful vagrants physically scarred by poverty. Even eugenic thinking persists in modern forms, from fertility treatments for the wealthy to restrictions on poor women's reproductive rights. As Billy Redden - the banjo player from Deliverance - demonstrates by working at Walmart and "struggling really hard to make ends meet" forty years after the film, white trash remains "a central, if disturbing, thread in our national narrative," proving that these marginalized Americans "are who we are and have been a fundamental part of our history, whether we like it or not." The persistence of class in America challenges our most cherished national myths. We've never been a classless society, and the American Dream has always been more accessible to some than others. By confronting this uncomfortable truth about our past and present, perhaps we can finally begin to address the deep inequalities that have defined our nation from its very beginning.
