America's racial caste system, having survived for four centuries through multiple transformations, has proven remarkably resilient. Yet understanding its connections to other caste systems helps us see it not as an unchangeable feature of our society but as a human creation that humans can dismantle. The same determination that has challenged caste in India and defeated it in Nazi Germany can be brought to bear on America's persistent hierarchy. By placing America's racial struggles in this global context, we gain both perspective and solidarity. We're not facing a uniquely American problem but participating in humanity's ongoing struggle against artificial hierarchies that diminish us all.
