Platon (428/427–348/347 v. Chr.) war ein antiker griechischer Philosoph und ein wegweisender Denker der westlichen Philosophie, am besten bekannt für seinen zeitlosen Dialog Das Gastmahl (Symposion), der Liebe, Schönheit und menschliches Begehren durch sokratischen Diskurs erforscht. Als Schüler von Sokrates und Mentor von Aristoteles gründete Platon die Platonische Akademie, die erste Institution für höhere Bildung in der westlichen Welt.

Seine Werke, darunter Der Staat (Politeia), Phaidon und Timaios, revolutionierten die Metaphysik, Ethik und politische Theorie und führten beständige Konzepte wie die Ideenlehre ein – ein Gerüst, das abstrakte Ideale von ihren physischen Erscheinungsformen unterscheidet.

Platons Schriften verbinden literarische Kunstfertigkeit mit strenger philosophischer Untersuchung und prägten Disziplinen von der Psychologie bis zur Erkenntnistheorie.
