Platon (428/427–348/347 v. Chr.) war ein antiker griechischer Philosoph und Begründer des westlichen philosophischen Denkens. Er verfasste den Phaidon als Teil seiner Untersuchung von Ethik, Metaphysik und der Unsterblichkeit der Seele. Als Schüler von Sokrates und Lehrer von Aristoteles gründete Platon die Platonische Akademie, die erste Institution für höhere Bildung in der westlichen Welt.

Seine Dialoge, darunter Der Staat und Timaios, verflechten Rationalität, Moral und Erkenntnistheorie und festigten sein Vermächtnis in der politischen Theorie, Psychologie und Theologie.
