External justification isn't limited to money or requirements-it can include pleasing others or doing favors. Harsh punishment provides external justification for compliance but doesn't change internal attitudes. But in groups, their judgments converged toward a common norm, with these socially-influenced perceptions persisting even when tested alone later.
Solomon Asch took conformity research further by testing whether people would conform even when judgments were unambiguous. The twist: confederates unanimously gave wrong answers before the real participant responded. Remarkably, about 35 percent of responses conformed to these obviously incorrect judgments.
People conform for two primary reasons: to gain valuable information from others (informative conformity) or to secure social acceptance by signaling similarity (normative conformity). In Asch's experiments, participants likely conformed to avoid feeling excluded, as evidenced by their honest responses when allowed to answer privately.
Compliance, though ephemeral, can have profound consequences, as Stanley Milgram's classic obedience studies demonstrated. In these experiments, participants were instructed to administer increasingly painful electric shocks to a "learner" (actually an actor) whenever he made errors on a memory test. This process, called scapegoating, derives its name from ancient Hebrew rituals where a goat symbolically carried away the community's sins.
Our need to justify our behavior and preserve our self-image drives much prejudice. When we treat a group cruelly, we tend to convince ourselves they deserve it by viewing them as unworthy, subhuman, or immoral. This self-justification allows us to maintain our moral self-image while committing immoral acts.
For those low on the socioeconomic ladder, prejudice offers the psychological comfort of feeling superior to someone. Research consistently shows that people with low or declining social status express more prejudice than those with high or rising status.
Many people acquire prejudice simply by conforming to prevailing social norms rather than through personality traits or economic competition. A classic example comes from a study of coal miners in segregation-era West Virginia who worked together underground in complete integration but maintained strict segregation above ground. This inconsistency reflected conformity to different social norms in different contexts.
Stereotype threat occurs when people fear confirming negative stereotypes about their group, and this anxiety ironically impairs their performance. Research shows that the same communicator may be viewed as highly credible by some audience members and not by others. Trustworthiness significantly impacts persuasiveness. Communications differ in effectiveness based on five key dimensions. A community's fluoridation vote showed how fear-based messaging ("Don't let them put rat poison in your drinking water") defeated logical appeals from health authorities.
