The partisan groups also differed dramatically in how they perceived the actual content: pro-Arabs thought 42% of references to Israel were favorable and 26% unfavorable, while pro-Israelis saw only 16% favorable references and 57% unfavorable ones. These differences remained significant even when controlling for differences in perceived content, suggesting partisans literally saw different content and evaluated the same content differently.
This study joins many others revealing how perceptions are shaped by existing beliefs and biases. Research has repeatedly demonstrated how racial stereotypes can distort perception, as in Allport and Postman's classic study where White participants misremembered a Black man holding a razor that was actually held by a White man. Similarly, Duncan found that identical shoving behavior was interpreted as "violent" 75% of the time when performed by a Black man but only 17% when performed by a White man.
These studies highlight the central role cognition plays in human behavior. We never perceive reality directly but rather interact with our perception of reality, which is inherently partial and filtered. Rational decision-making should weigh probability and desirability of outcomes regardless of presentation. However, humans are significantly influenced by how options are framed. Whether emphasizing gains or losses provides identical objective information, but affects decisions differently. This explains phenomena like "psychic budgets" where we're more willing to spend on accessories during major purchases when they seem relatively minor compared to the total cost.
Even when we intellectually understand how framing affects our judgment, we often still feel emotionally swayed by it - creating a curious mental duality. This resembles perceptual illusions like seeing a stationary train appear to move backward; we can rationally verify it's not moving, yet can't eliminate the illusion from consciousness. Similarly with cognitive biases, we may understand their irrationality while still experiencing their effects.

In contrast, participants paid $20 showed no such attitude shift - the larger incentive provided sufficient justification for their deception, preventing cognitive dissonance from occurring.
This study demonstrates how rationalization works through cognitive consistency mechanisms - when faced with uncomfortable contradictions between beliefs and actions, people often change their beliefs rather than admit inconsistency. The findings reveal that actions can shape attitudes as effectively as attitudes shape actions, sometimes more powerfully than logical persuasion. Some participants had to read aloud obscene words and explicit sexual passages in front of a male experimenter (severe initiation), others read only mildly sex-related words (mild initiation), while a control group had no initiation. All participants then listened to the same pre-recorded discussion that was deliberately designed to be extremely dull and worthless.
The results clearly supported the effort-justification hypothesis: participants in the severe-initiation condition rated both the discussion and the discussants significantly more favorably than those in the mild-initiation and no-initiation conditions. This occurred because participants experienced cognitive dissonance - they had freely submitted to an unpleasant initiation yet found group membership disappointing. Unable to deny their voluntary participation or the unpleasantness of the initiation, they resolved this dissonance by convincing themselves the group experience was worthwhile.
This study reveals that overcoming painful obstacles to join a group makes people value membership more, not less - explaining why loyalty can increase despite incentives to leave. While removing obstacles and offering rewards can shape behavior, they don't necessarily foster genuine commitment. To transform people's feelings, a more indirect approach works better: having them willingly undergo hardship as a precondition for joining. This self-justification process ensures people come to value membership intrinsically rather than for external rewards.
This phenomenon explains why organizations from college fraternities to the military impose harsh initiations. Historical analysis of 19th-century Utopian cults confirms this pattern - those requiring significant sacrifices from members lasted longer than those that didn't. The effect can also explain how people get drawn into extremist groups through gradually increasing commitments.

While rewards effectively alter behavior in the short term, they can make people weary of activities they would otherwise enjoy. Extrinsic rewards harm more than just intrinsic motivation. Research shows that paid work often leads to diminished creativity and problem-solving ability. Similarly, participants offered incentives took nearly 50% longer to solve creative problems than those offered nothing. The results were stunning. While experts predicted that only 0-3% of people would deliver the maximum shock, 65% of participants actually administered the full 450-volt "XXX" shock. Not a single participant stopped before 300 volts. Most showed signs of extreme distress - sweating, trembling, and protesting - yet continued to obey.
In follow-up studies, Milgram found that obedience decreased when: the experimenter gave instructions by telephone (16% compliance); the learner was visible in the same room (40% compliance); or when confederate "teachers" refused to continue (only 10% compliance). Conversely, obedience increased to 93% when participants played only a subsidiary role while watching someone else administer shocks.
Milgram's findings shook academia and society by suggesting that ordinary people can commit brutal acts under authority's influence. As Milgram stated, "A substantial proportion of people do what they are told to do, irrespective of the content of the act and without limitations of conscience." His research challenges our moral self-complacency, showing how powerful situational forces can override individual values.
While Milgram's research revealed what happened, the psychological mechanisms behind participants' obedience remain debated.
