Betty Friedan (1921–2006), geborene Bettye Naomi Goldstein, war eine wegweisende feministische Schriftstellerin und Aktivistin, deren bahnbrechendes Buch Das Unbehagen der Geschlechter (The Feminine Mystique) im Jahr 1963 die zweite Welle des Feminismus auslöste.

Als Summa-cum-laude-Absolventin des Smith College und ehemalige Psychologieforscherin an der UC Berkeley verband Friedan akademische Strenge mit Basisarbeit, um die Geschlechternormen der Nachkriegszeit infrage zu stellen. Ihre Untersuchung von Themen wie einschränkenden Geschlechterrollen, weiblicher Identität und gesellschaftlichem Druck gestaltete die Debatten über Frauenrechte neu.
