When recruiting, it's both stupid and illegal to make decisions based on irrelevant factors like gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or age. With A players in short supply, why limit your talent pool? Focus on hiring people with major strengths, even if they have major weaknesses-high achievers typically do. Mediocre people tend to lack both.
Beyond salary and equity, use all available recruiting tools: your vision of making meaning, your existing team of superstars, your board members and advisors, and the resume-building potential of working at your startup. Once you decide on a candidate, hold nothing back in your pursuit.
Remember that candidates aren't the only decision makers in their job search. Spouses, children, parents, and friends often influence the decision. Ask candidates who their important decision makers are, then work to address their concerns too.

Many startups obsess about landing "reference accounts"-big, prestigious companies that provide both money and credibility. However, these established companies are often "atheists" who benefit from the status quo and resist innovation. Instead, focus on "agnostics" or "nonconsumers" who aren't using anything because current offerings are too expensive or complex. Doing what's right means consistently taking the high road, even when it's costly or inconvenient. This principle applies across various business scenarios: honoring the spirit of agreements beyond their literal terms (like paying an investment bank their fee even when a deal closes slightly after the contract expires), maintaining integrity in financial dealings (such as notifying suppliers when they've undercharged), and prioritizing fairness over immediate advantage (as in supporting measures to maintain competitive balance in sports leagues). A mensch understands that short-term gains achieved through ethical compromises ultimately undermine long-term success.
A true mensch acknowledges their debt to society and actively works to repay it. This debt encompasses many gifts: supportive family and friends, spiritual fulfillment, good health, beautiful surroundings, and economic opportunities. Repayment comes in multiple forms beyond monetary contributions - investing time in community service, sharing expertise through teaching or mentoring, providing emotional support to others in crisis, or advocating for important causes.
