The Other Road: Biological Alternatives

We stand at a critical fork in the road-one path offers deceptive ease but leads to disaster, while the other, less traveled path represents our only chance to preserve the earth. If we've asserted our right to know and recognized the senseless risks of chemical controls, we must seek alternatives. A remarkable variety of biological solutions exists, drawing on entomology, pathology, genetics and ecology to form a new science of biotic controls. Among the most fascinating biological control methods is the "male sterilization" technique developed by Dr. Edward Knipling of the USDA. First proposed a quarter-century earlier but met with bureaucratic resistance, Knipling's method involves releasing sterilized male insects to compete with wild males, eventually causing population collapse through infertile matings. After laboratory experiments confirmed insects could be sterilized by radiation, Knipling applied this technique against the screw-worm fly-a devastating livestock parasite causing $40 million in annual losses and threatening wildlife populations across the southern United States. In 1954, after years of research and preliminary trials, Knipling conducted a full-scale test on Curacao island in the Caribbean. Sterilized screw-worms were released from airplanes at 400 per square mile weekly. Within just seven weeks, all egg masses became infertile, and soon no eggs could be found at all-complete eradication had been achieved on the island. Following the Curacao success, Florida livestock producers sought similar relief from screw-worm infestations. Despite the enormous challenge of treating an area 300 times larger, the USDA and Florida launched an ambitious program in 1957. A specialized "fly factory" produced 50 million sterilized screw-worms weekly, with 20 light aircraft releasing them in carefully planned patterns. Taking advantage of a cold winter that naturally reduced pest populations, the program released 3.5 billion sterilized flies over 17 months across Florida, Georgia and Alabama. By February 1959, the last infestation occurred, and within weeks the screw-worm had been completely eradicated from the Southeast. The biological control of insects has ancient roots in the knowledge that insects succumb to disease. Microbial insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis are being field-tested worldwide: in France and Germany against cabbage butterfly larvae, in Yugoslavia against fall webworms, in the Soviet Union against tent caterpillars. In Panama, this bacterial approach may solve serious banana plantation problems where chemical controls have created resistance in root borers while destroying predators of tortricid moths. Setting insects against other insects dates back to Erasmus Darwin around 1800 and became the first widely practiced biological control method. In America, this approach began in 1888 when Albert Koebele traveled to Australia seeking natural enemies of the cottony cushion scale threatening California citrus. This mission's success launched a century of similar efforts, resulting in approximately 100 established species of imported predators and parasites. California's investment of $4,000,000 in biological control has reportedly yielded $100,000,000 in returns. These creative approaches to pest management share a fundamental awareness that we're dealing with living populations and their complex ecological relationships. Only by understanding and guiding these life forces can we achieve reasonable accommodation with insects. The chemical barrage represents a crude weapon hurled against the fabric of life-both delicate and resilient. The "control of nature" concept stems from a primitive scientific age when nature was thought to exist for human convenience.
