Aischylos (ca. 525–456 v. Chr.) war ein antiker griechischer Tragödiendichter und Autor von Der gefesselte Prometheus, der als „Vater der Tragödie“ gefeiert wird. Aischylos schrieb etwa 70 bis 90 Stücke, von denen jedoch nur sieben vollständig erhalten sind, darunter sein Meisterwerk, die Trilogie der Orestie. Als dekorierter Veteran der Perserkriege, der in der Schlacht bei Marathon kämpfte, schätzte er seinen Militärdienst so hoch ein, dass seine selbst verfasste Grabinschrift nur diese Schlacht erwähnte und seine theatralischen Leistungen gänzlich aussparte.
