Euripides (ca. 484–406 v. Chr.) war ein antiker griechischer Tragödiendichter und Autor der Medea sowie einer der drei großen Tragödienschreiber des klassischen Athens neben Aeschylus und Sophokles. Geboren in Athen, revolutionierte Euripides die griechische Tragödie, indem er mythische Helden als gewöhnliche Menschen darstellte und komplexen Frauenfiguren prominente Rollen zuwies – Innovationen, die Medeas Auseinandersetzung mit Rache, Verrat und Geschlechterrollen tiefgreifend resonant machten.

Aristoteles nannte ihn wegen seiner schonungslosen Darstellung menschlichen Leidens den „tragischsten aller Dichter“. Seine theatralischen Neuerungen beeinflussten das Drama über Jahrhunderte hinweg, von Shakespeare bis Ibsen. Von den etwa 90 Stücken, die er schrieb, sind 19 erhalten geblieben – mehr als die Werke von Aeschylus und Sophokles zusammen.
