Traditional translations of Romans 1:3-4 have misled readers by suggesting Jesus was declared "Son of God in power" at his own resurrection. Paul's Greek actually ties Christ's manifestation in power to the general resurrection at the End-not to his personal resurrection witnessed by only a select few.

The Legacy of Paul: Prophet, Not Founder

Paul's commitment to God's coming Kingdom manifested through his tireless pagan recruitment, maintenance of ethnic distinctions, defiance of pagan gods, and spiritual empowerment. His apocalyptic expectation drove the first generation of believers, who thought they would be the only generation. Biblical themes of gentile inclusion explained both why the earliest movement extended to gentiles and what was required of them: exclusive commitment to Israel's god and renunciation of their own deities. For Paul, these gentile converts connected Jesus of Nazareth to the apocalyptic messiah-their turning from pagan gods was living proof of cosmic powers' defeat. Their surprising, ongoing response convinced Paul the Kingdom was even closer than when he first believed in Damascus. Yet time didn't end, and the gospel movement continued in "vigorous variety." Paul's legacy shifted as later followers updated his message-explaining the Kingdom's delay, erasing ethnic distinctions, declaring cosmic powers already defeated, and establishing church structures for a community settled in time rather than awaiting its imminent end. By the second century, both Paul's Jewish identity and his god's ethnicity were called into question, as educated ex-pagan Christian theologians recast the high god as the ethnically featureless deity of philosophical paideia rather than the involved god of Jewish scripture. These theologians de-ethnicized Paul's god and reconceptualized his Kingdom, transforming his urgent apocalyptic message into polarized opposites-Law or gospel, works or grace, Judaism or Christianity-that Paul himself would not have recognized. His mission to pagans was always consistent with God's promises to Israel, and he remained utterly convinced that he and his assemblies would live to see those promises fulfilled. If we can see past later ecclesiastical traditions, we can better recognize Paul as a passionate Second Temple visionary, apostle of the final Davidic messiah, brilliant student of Jewish law, expert scripture interpreter, charismatic miracle worker, messenger of the Kingdom, and the pagans' apostle-a figure both more Jewish and more radical than tradition has allowed us to see.
