Yet intellectuals rarely mention the 1920s when discussing eras of "change" because these developments weren't the particular kinds of changes envisioned by the intelligentsia through their preferred social mechanisms.
To understand intellectuals' role in society requires examining their revealed preferences rather than their rhetoric. While intellectuals profess concern for the poor, minorities, social justice, and the environment, their actual behavior often tells a different story.
After decades of policies producing negative "unintended consequences," anyone genuinely concerned with helping the less fortunate would invest significant effort in evaluating actual outcomes of their proposed solutions. They would also remain receptive to alternative approaches that empirically help the disadvantaged, even if these contradict their vision.
Instead, many intellectuals invest enormous energy promoting their vision but virtually none examining its consequences. This pattern suggests that for many intellectuals, the real purpose of social crusades isn't improving conditions for the less fortunate but proclaiming themselves "on the side of the angels."

What have intellectuals actually accomplished for society? While areas outside their primary influence-science, industry, medicine-have seen great advances, fields within their domain-education, politics, law-have experienced dangerous retrogressions.
Beginning in the 1960s, despite increased educational spending, test scores declined following "innovative" theories. Murder rates tripled after new crime theories were applied in courts. Sexually transmitted diseases and teenage pregnancy rates reversed their downward trends as "sex education" programs spread.
