In China, despite official rejection of the "barbarian" Yuan Dynasty, many Mongol innovations in governance and commerce quietly persisted. The Mongol collapse also had unintended positive consequences. As direct east-west trade became more difficult, Europeans began seeking alternative routes to Asian markets-eventually leading to the age of maritime exploration. Columbus was searching for a route to the wealth of Cathay (China), described so tantalizingly by Marco Polo, when he stumbled upon the Americas.
