Despite his small stature, Deng developed connections with future Communist Party leaders, especially Zhou Enlai, with whom he published a Marxist newspaper. By early 1934, Nationalist troops under General Chiang Kai-shek threatened the Communist Party's survival. The leadership embarked on the Long March, a grueling year-long trek covering 6,000 miles to northwest Shaanxi province. Carrying supplies on their backs and animals, the marchers endured Nationalist attacks, sickness, hunger and exhaustion across mountains, plains and swamps. Deng contracted typhoid and nearly died. Of 80,000 who began, fewer than 10% survived. Veterans of the Long March, including Deng, became the aristocracy of the Chinese Revolution. By 1956, Deng had become one of China's six most powerful men, settling in Beijing's protected Zhongnanhai enclave with his family. In the treacherous political environment surrounding the capricious Mao, Deng proved a deft organizer who kept the trains running-someone who executed decisions rather than challenging Mao directly. The Cultural Revolution began in 1966 with purges of "reactionary bourgeois thinking" that soon targeted the highest levels of government. Mao's wife Jiang Qing and the "Gang of Four" were empowered to punish anyone lacking Maoist enthusiasm. When Deng and Liu tried negotiating with the marauding Red Guards, Mao denounced them both as "capitalist roaders." Stripped of his titles and publicly humiliated in Tiananmen Square, Deng issued a self-criticism to save his party membership and life. The Red Guards placed Deng and his wife under house arrest, forcing them into humiliating positions, beating them before their children. In one horrific incident, Deng's eldest son Pufang was beaten and either jumped or was thrown from a window, leaving him paralyzed for life. Deng's opportunity came in 1970 when Mao turned against his designated heir Lin Biao. By 1973, Mao allowed his return to Beijing as deputy premier, calling him "a rare talent" and "like a needle wrapped in cotton." Deng moved quickly to implement "the Four Modernizations" in agriculture, industry, military, and science. He provided material incentives for workers, promoted foreign trade, and prioritized economic progress over revolutionary rhetoric. By 1980, Deng's Age of Reform was transforming China despite his modest titles that understated his power. Unlike previous leaders who blamed China's problems on foreigners, Deng recognized China needed to learn from the world. Seeing Japan's economic miracle spreading to Taiwan and South Korea, he turned China's focus from nursing grudges toward building a promising future. Over two decades, Deng prioritized economic development and high growth rates. He reduced state intervention, embraced the idea that some could get rich faster than others, shifted resources from military to civilian sectors, introduced market reforms in agriculture, abolished communes, and gave peasants rights to sell products on the open market. The results were dramatic: farm production rose substantially, peasant income doubled from 1978-1982, and agricultural productivity increased nearly twenty times faster than during the Maoist period.

Rothschild coordinated banking operations across countries. Field orchestrated engineers, scientists, financiers, and government negotiations. Rockefeller managed a global corporate empire before modern communications. Thatcher commanded policy details as a powerful political weapon. Grove managed every aspect of manufacturing down to restroom cleaning schedules. Though facing different circumstances, these ten leaders confronted challenges as formidable as ours. The world seemed just as wild and uncontrollable in the 12th century when Genghis Khan carved a guarded route through chaos. Today's unknowns are no more formidable than Cape Bojador was when Prince Henry broke its psychological hold. Field attempted the transatlantic telegraph when no one had mapped the ocean floor. Monnet persuaded Germany and France to cooperate while World War II's guns barely fell silent. Can individuals still wield transformational influence in our complex world? Despite arguments that modern globalization is too complex for individual impact, history suggests otherwise. Every era seems newly complex to those living in it, yet previous challenges seemed equally insurmountable. Today's globalization actually provides more powerful tools for leaders-instant communications, rapid transport networks, cross-border capital flows, and global R&D-suggesting future hedgehogs may have even greater impact than their predecessors.
