Geboren: March 21, 1949 – Ljubljana, People's Republic of Slovenia, Yugoslavia

Slavoj Žižek is a Slovenian philosopher, cultural critic, and public intellectual whose work spans psychoanalysis, political theory, film, and ideology critique. Biografie & Werdegang des Autors

Born in Ljubljana on March 21, 1949, and educated in socialist Yugoslavia, Slavoj Žižek came of age inside a society whose official emancipatory ideals often collided with lived contradiction. He studied philosophy at the University of Ljubljana, earning bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees there, before deepening his turn toward Lacanian psychoanalysis at Paris VIII, where he completed a second doctorate in the mid-1980s. During the 1980s he also became active in Slovenia’s democratic opposition, writing for Mladina and helping shape the language through which many student activists understood ideology, culture, and politics. A decisive early turning point came in 1990, when he ran in Slovenia’s first democratic elections and narrowly missed a place in the country’s collective presidency.
